Confession: I Spent Thousands on Branding and Tech I Don't Even Use Anymore

When I first started my agency, I did what a lot of enthusiastic new business owners do: I overspent on all the wrong things.

I jumped from CRM to CRM, chasing the perfect platform. My host agency provided a basic landing page, but instead of using it, I spent hundreds of dollars on a custom website that I don't even have today. I paid for a logo I ended up ditching because I hated it, and invested in branding guidelines I didn't even know how to use. I even bought automated social media generators that ended up tanking my reach in the algorithms.

Am I perfect? Far from it—I am actually looking to upgrade my own agency's hosting platform right now. But I have learned the hard way that this business is expensive to start, and you need to protect your capital.

If I could go back, I would tell myself one thing: Bootstrapped is best. In the beginning, operate at the bare minimum and do as much for FREE as you possibly can.

1. Where to Actually Spend Your Money (The Non-Negotiables)

Instead of buying flashy tools, divert your startup capital toward legal compliance, protection, and firsthand expertise. These are the expenses that actually protect and grow your business:

  • Legal Setup (LLC): Properly register your business structure to protect your personal assets.

  • Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance: This is non-negotiable. It protects you legally and financially if an oversight occurs on a booking.

  • Personal FAM Trips & Travel: You don’t need to see every destination you sell, but firsthand experience accelerates your learning curve and builds immediate authority with clients. Pay for your own educational trips early on.

  • A Financial Runway: If your goal is to leave your full-time 9-to-5, your cash should go directly into a savings buffer, not software subscriptions.

2. The "Bare Minimum" Free Tech Stack

You do not need a multi-hundred-dollar software suite to book your first client. Utilize these zero-dollar alternatives to build your foundation:

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

While I don't recommend leaving all your proprietary data solely trapped in a host’s closed ecosystem, you don't need to purchase an independent, top-tier CRM on day one.

  • The Free Fix: Export your client essentials (names, emails, phone numbers—never credit card info) into a secure Google Sheet. Alternatively, open a free account on HubSpot to track your pipeline until your booking volume justifies a paid industry-specific CRM.

Digital & Web Presence

Do not drop $1,000 on a custom website before you have a steady stream of clients.

  • The Free Fix: Maximize your free social media profiles. Use a free landing tool like Linktree or Bio.site to house your intake forms, contact information, and any travel features you write.

Marketing Graphics

Stop paying for premium graphic subscriptions or automated posting tools that hurt your organic reach.

  • The Free Fix: Use your own high-quality travel photos, images sent by your clients (with permission), or official marketing assets provided directly by your destination and cruise line suppliers. Just ensure you give proper supplier credit when posting.

Take it easy on yourself during the launch phase. Handle your legal requirements first, build your personal savings, and leverage free tools until your commission checks start paying for the upgrades.
