Why Your Host Agency Isn’t Your Only Lifeline
Finding the right host agency is a lot like dating. You’re looking for a partner that supports your goals, aligns with your values, and actually follows through on their promises.
My own journey to founding Prism Premier Travel wasn't a straight line. I started with a host because they had a DEI division, which I loved—but the content was stale and the energy just wasn't there. I moved to another that promised modern tech, but the marketing was deceptive. I even looked into specialized LGBTQ+ hosts, but the fees and splits were, frankly, horrendous.
I realized then that if I wanted a host agency that was aggressive about queer marketing, fair with its agents, and modern in its approach, I was going to have to build it myself.
We’re Building the Table Together
As I write this, my agency is the "new kid on the block." I don’t have the massive corporate muscle or the thousand-page marketing asset libraries that the legacy agencies have—yet. But I am building it every single day, and I am inviting you to be part of that foundation.
However, this post isn’t just a sales pitch for Prism Premier Travel. It’s about a mindset shift that every travel advisor needs to make to survive in this industry.
The Host Agency "Red Flags"
In my search, I encountered a lot of gatekeeping. Here is a piece of advice from one professional to another: If a host agency tells you that you should only speak to agents within their organization, run. Any agency that tries to control who you network with or how you run your business is operating from a place of fear. That is a massive red flag. You are an independent business owner, and your support system should be as diverse as your client list.
Finding Your "Board of Directors"
Even when I was with other hosts, I looked outward for support. Your growth as an advisor will happen faster if you look beyond your "home" agency. I encourage you to:
Join External Associations: Groups like DWHSA (Destination Wedding & Honeymoon Specialists Association) are invaluable.
Find Private Communities: Look for Facebook groups and local cohorts of agents who share your niche, regardless of who their host is.
Seek Mentors: Find someone who is where you want to be and learn from their trajectory.
The Big Takeaway: Abundance vs. Scarcity
If you learn one thing from my journey, let it be this: When we move away from a scarcity mindset, our businesses boom.
There is a misconception that there are only so many clients to go around. That’s simply not true. There is enough business for everyone. As much as I would love for you to join my agency, we might not be the perfect fit for your specific needs—and that’s okay! I still want to connect with you. I still want us to support each other.
When we stop being afraid to reach out and start sharing our wins and our warnings, the entire industry gets better for LGBTQ+ travelers.
