And You Don't Have to Be Either
Every travel advisor struggles with this. Especially me.
Our marketing tends to come in waves. When client inquiries are flooding in, we scale back on marketing because there simply aren’t enough hours in the day. Let’s be honest: you didn't get into the travel industry to become a full-time content creator. Managing a blog, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest on top of client itineraries is exhausting.
But this role is heavily reliant on sales and marketing. To survive the busy seasons, we have to shift from reactionary marketing to anticipatory marketing.
Here is how to find your balance, protect your time, and market smarter.
1. Schedule Your Non-Negotiable Growth Events
Marketing isn't just digital; it’s personal. Look at your calendar at the start of the quarter and lock in your high-value visibility events.
Action Step: Identify the one wedding show, local networking event, or major supplier webinar that will directly drive revenue to your specific niche.
The Rule: Block it off on your calendar immediately. Treat it as a non-negotiable client meeting. If it isn't scheduled, it won't happen.
2. Bank Your Long-Form Content (The "Drafts" Method)
When business slows down, use that pocket of time to build a content safety net. Long-form platforms like blogs, Pinterest, and YouTube have a long shelf-life, making them perfect for batching.
The Strategy: When you have a slow week, write two or three blog posts at once. Do not publish them all at once. Save the extras in your drafts.
The Payoff: When Wave Season hits and you are buried under supplier hold times, you can simply hit "publish" on a banked draft to keep your website traffic consistent without lifting a finger.
3. Simplify Instagram with the 5-Minute Rule
The "banking" strategy doesn’t work well for Instagram because the platform relies on trending audio and shifting algorithms. Instead of fighting the algorithm, lower the barrier to entry. You don’t need to spend hours on Canva creating the "perfect" aesthetic grid.
Quick, High-Value Instagram Ideas:
The 5-Minute Value Post: Take a simple, high-quality photo or selfie. Pair it with a short, punchy caption offering a single travel tip.
Social Proof: Did a client just send you a glowing review? Take a screenshot, drop it on a simple background, and post it.
Give Yourself Grace: A missed post or a quiet week on social media is not going to kill your business. Consistency matters, but your mental health and client execution matter more. Keep going.
4. Stop "Certificate Hoarding" in Travel Agent Training
Professional development is vital, but you cannot spend hours at your desk completing every single supplier academy module available. Signing up for everything leads to training fatigue and zero implementation.
Instead, optimize your training pipeline by asking yourself three strategic questions:
1. Which supplier am I currently booking the most?
2. What specific destination is driving my highest profit margins?
3. What is my primary target niche (e.g., LGBT+ luxury travel)?
The Solution: Pick one or two certifications that align directly with the answers above. Work on only those during your downtime. Ignore the rest until your business model demands them.
